Russ Titelman was born on August 16, 1944, in Los Angeles, California. An American record producer and songwriter, he began his musical career in the 1960s, serving as the rhythm guitarist in the house band on the television program Shindig. During that period he also studied sitar for one year under Ravi Shankar at Shankar's Kinnara School of Music in Los Angeles. Titelman's family is Jewish.

Over the following decades, Titelman built an extensive career working with a wide range of rock and popular musicians, including Nancy Sinatra, The Monkees, Dion DiMucci, George Harrison, the Bee Gees, Little Feat, Christine McVie, Meat Loaf, Paul Simon, Brian Wilson, The Allman Brothers Band, James Taylor, Rickie Lee Jones, Chaka Khan with Rufus and as a solo artist, Ry Cooder, Randy Newman, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, Crazy Horse, Gerry Goffin, and Eric Clapton. He spent twenty years working for Warner Bros. Records before transitioning to independent production in 1997.

Titelman has received three Grammy Awards. The first came for his production of Steve Winwood's song "Higher Love," and the second and third were earned for his work on Eric Clapton's albums Journeyman and Unplugged, respectively. He also produced Clapton's 1990 live album 24 Nights and the all-blues record From the Cradle, released in 1994. Among his other notable production credits are Randy Newman's Sail Away, Good Old Boys, Little Criminals, Born Again, and Trouble in Paradise; Paul Simon's Hearts and Bones; Ry Cooder's Paradise and Lunch; James Taylor's Gorilla and October Road; George Harrison's self-titled 1979 album; Rickie Lee Jones's debut album and Pirates; Christine McVie's self-titled 1984 record; Brian Wilson's 1988 self-titled album; and Cyndi Lauper's At Last.

Following his departure from Warner Bros., Titelman founded the independent music label Walking Liberty Records in New York. One of the label's early releases was Blue Alleluia, the 2005 debut album by Oklahoma-based singer-songwriter Jared Tyler, which featured guest appearances from Emmylou Harris, Mac McAnally, and Mary Kay Place.

In addition to his recording career, Titelman appeared on Broadway in 1997 in An American Daughter.
