Rufus Frederik Sewell is a British actor born on 29 October 1967 in Twickenham, England. His father, William John Frederick Sewell (1924–1978), was an Anglo-Australian animator whose credits included work on the "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" segment of the Beatles' Yellow Submarine film. His mother, Jo, is a Welsh artist and classically trained pianist. His parents divorced when Sewell was five, and his father died when he was ten. His mother later lived at The Pelican in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, a property formerly associated with the family of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Sewell attended Orleans Park School in Twickenham, leaving in 1984, then enrolled at West Thames College, where a drama teacher encouraged him to audition for drama school. He subsequently trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.

Sewell's stage career includes significant work with playwright Tom Stoppard. In 1993 he originated the role of Septimus Hodge in Stoppard's Arcadia. He later originated the role of Jan in Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll, appearing in its premiere and first run at the Royal Court Theatre from June to July 2006 and subsequently at the Duke of York's Theatre from July through November 2006. That performance earned him an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Play. On Broadway, Sewell appeared in Translations and in Rock 'n' Roll, with his Broadway activity spanning 1995 to 2007. His Broadway debut was recognized with a Theatre World Award in 1995. The Broadway production of Rock 'n' Roll also brought him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play.

His Shakespeare work across his professional career has been extensive. He portrayed Hotspur in Henry IV, Part 1 in 1995, Fortinbras in Hamlet in 1996, the title role in Macbeth in 1999, and Petruchio in a BBC modern retelling of The Taming of the Shrew in 2005, the last of which earned him a Best Actor nomination at the 2006 BAFTA Television Awards.

Sewell's film work includes Carrington (1995), Hamlet (1996), Dangerous Beauty (1998), Dark City (1998), A Knight's Tale (2001), The Legend of Zorro (2005), The Illusionist (2006), Amazing Grace (2006), The Holiday (2006), The Tourist (2010), Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012), Judy (2019), The Father (2020), and Old (2021). He co-starred with Dwayne Johnson as Autolycus in Hercules (2014) and appeared in the controversial film Downloading Nancy, released on 5 June 2009, which drew walkouts at its Sundance Film Festival screening in 2008. In 2023 it was announced he had been cast as Prince Andrew in Scoop, a Netflix drama about Andrew's 2019 Newsnight interview, co-starring Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper, and Keeley Hawes.

His television credits include Middlemarch (1994), Cold Comfort Farm (1995), Arabian Nights (2000), Charles II: The Power and the Passion (2003), John Adams (2008), Eleventh Hour (2008–2009), The Pillars of the Earth (2010), Zen (2011), Parade's End (2012), The Man in the High Castle (2014–2019), Victoria (2016–2017), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2019), and The Pale Horse (2020). In Zen he played Italian detective Aurelio Zen across three episodes filmed in Rome, based on the novels of Michael Dibdin. He currently stars in the Netflix series The Diplomat, which began in 2023. Between 2006 and 2009 he also recorded readings of Russell Thorndike's Doctor Syn stories for BBC Radio, and he recorded eleven of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels across 36 CDs for Collins.

Sewell has been married three times. He married Australian fashion journalist Yasmin Abdallah in 1999; they divorced in 2000. His second marriage, to scriptwriter and producer Amy Gardner in 2004, ended in divorce in 2006, and they have a son together. He also has a daughter with Ami Komai. In July 2024 he married American actress Vivian Benitez.
