About
Rudolph Martin del Campo, known professionally as Rudy del Campo, was born on 21 April 1927 in Los Angeles, California, to Alberto Martín del Campo and Concepción Castellanos, both of whom were born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and had married there in 1915 before migrating to the United States. Though a native of Los Angeles, del Campo spent a considerable portion of his childhood in Mexico with extended family, during which time he developed an interest in American musical films, particularly those featuring Fred Astaire, an influence that shaped his pursuit of a career in dance. He had several siblings, among them Beatriz del Campo and Oscar Medardo del Campo Castellanos (1936–2014).
At eighteen, del Campo was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War period, having previously been employed at Western Insulated Wire Company in Los Angeles. He served approximately two years, receiving training in field artillery and also working as a projectionist screening educational and public-health films for fellow servicemen.
Following his return to Los Angeles, del Campo trained as a dancer and began performing professionally in the early 1950s. By 1951 he was a member of the Lee Scott Dancers, a Los Angeles–based troupe composed largely of students from Edith Jane's dance classes, whose members included Helen Silver, Betty Evans, Charles Miller, and Lee Scott. The group performed regularly at Hollywood nightclubs and other Southern California venues. During this period del Campo also appeared as an uncredited dancer in the 1954 film A Star Is Born, starring Judy Garland.
In 1955, del Campo appeared on Broadway as a dancer in the musical The Vamp, which ran at the Winter Garden Theatre from November to December of that year and featured choreography by Jack Cole. His most prominent screen credit came in 1961, when he appeared as one of the Sharks in the film adaptation of West Side Story.
Del Campo married dancer Helen Silver in 1953. The two had worked together professionally, and Silver later became a co-founder of his restaurant venture. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1968. In 1965, del Campo met Nina del Campo, a Colombian-born woman who had begun working as a waitress at his restaurant; the two later married and had four children: Robert, Lisamaria, Mitchell, and Jennifer.
By 1962, del Campo had stepped away from full-time performing. That year, he, his then-wife Helen, and his sister Beatriz purchased a small bungalow at 1920 Hyperion Avenue in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles and opened Casita del Campo. Drawing on their backgrounds in show business, the founders installed a stage and regularly booked musicians, singers, comedians, and dancers. Del Campo himself tended bar, developed signature cocktails, and greeted patrons personally. Over the course of the 1960s, the restaurant expanded to include multiple dining rooms, a cocktail lounge, a patio, and a basement performance space called The Cavern Club. The establishment attracted members of the entertainment and dance communities, with patrons including George Chakiris, Juliet Prowse, choreographer Hermes Pan, dancer Andre Tayir, and actor Rock Hudson. Del Campo's brother Oscar Martin del Campo served as the restaurant's general manager during the mid-1960s. Del Campo's son Robert, born in 1967, later took on responsibility for managing Casita del Campo.
Rudy del Campo died on 28 August 2003 in Los Angeles, California.
