About

Rudolph Anders, born Rudolf Franz Amendt on December 17, 1895, in Waldkirch, Baden, Germany, was a character actor who built a career across both stage and screen in the United States. He died on March 27, 1987, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California.

Following the rise of Hitler in Germany, Anders emigrated to the United States and was naturalized as an American citizen in 1934. During the 1940s he performed under the stage name Robert O. Davis, later adopting the name Rudolph Anders after the war. His Broadway career spanned from 1914 to 1943, during which he appeared in a range of productions including the drama Counterattack, the drama The Russian People, Meet the People, and the play Yoshe Kalb.

Anders went on to appear in numerous American films throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. His German-accented English largely confined him to accent roles, and during World War II he was frequently cast in villain parts. His small build, wide eyes, soft voice, and naturally quiet demeanor, however, limited his ability to take on leading menacing roles. Anders was married.
