About

Ruben Santiago-Hudson, born Ruben Santiago Jr. on November 24, 1956, in Lackawanna, New York, is an American actor, playwright, and director whose work spans Broadway, television, and film. The son of Alean Hudson, an African American woman, and Ruben Santiago, a Puerto Rican railroad worker, he later incorporated his mother's maiden name into his surname. He attended Lackawanna High School before earning a bachelor's degree from Binghamton University and a master's degree from Wayne State University. Both Buffalo State College and Wayne State University subsequently awarded him honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees.

Santiago-Hudson's path to adopting his compound surname reflects the dual cultural identity he navigated early in his career. Upon arriving in New York in 1983, he performed under the name Ruben Santiago. When he sought work at the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, he was turned away because he does not speak Spanish; when he approached the Negro Ensemble Company, he was told they did not cast Puerto Ricans. He added Hudson to his name and subsequently won a role in A Soldier's Play at the Ensemble Company.

His Broadway career spans from 1992 to 2026 and includes a range of significant productions. He made his Broadway debut in Jelly's Last Jam in 1992, a musical written by George C. Wolfe. He went on to appear in Joe Turner's Come and Gone, Seven Guitars, Gem of the Ocean, Stick Fly, and Lackawanna Blues, among other productions. His performance in August Wilson's Seven Guitars earned him the 1996 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He appeared in Lydia R. Diamond's Stick Fly in November 2011 and has also contributed to Broadway as a book writer.

Santiago-Hudson wrote Lackawanna Blues in 2001, an autobiographical play in which he portrayed himself alongside approximately twenty characters drawn from his past. The work premiered at the Joseph Papp Theatre in New York that same year. He later adapted it for a 2005 HBO film in which the individual characters were played by different actors. The adaptation earned the Humanitas Prize in 2006 and received nominations for both an Emmy Award and a Writers Guild of America Award. In 2021, he received a Screen Writers Guild nomination for best adaptation for the film version of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

As a director, Santiago-Hudson earned the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director of a Play in 2017. His directorial work on the Off-Broadway production of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson in 2013 also brought him the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Director and an Obie Award for Direction, along with a Drama Desk Award nomination in that category. In 2016, he received the Obie Awards Special Citation for Collaboration for his contributions to Skeleton Crew alongside Dominique Morisseau and the Atlantic Theater Company. His performance work was recognized with the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play in 2022.

On television, Santiago-Hudson is perhaps most widely recognized for his role as New York City Police Captain Roy Montgomery on ABC's Castle, a part he held from 2009 until his character's death in the third season finale in 2011. He starred in the Detroit-set police drama Low Winter Sun in 2013 and appeared in a 2007 PBS Nova documentary about the life of chemist Percy Lavon Julian. His earlier television work included appearances on the daytime soap operas One Life to Live, Another World, and All My Children, as well as primetime series including The Cosby Mysteries, New York Undercover, NYPD Blue, Touched by an Angel, The West Wing, Third Watch, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and five episodes of Law & Order. In 2003, he served as a reader in Volume 13 of the HBO film Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narratives, a series narrated by Whoopi Goldberg.

Santiago-Hudson has also worked as an audiobook narrator. His narration of James Patterson's Cross Justice was recognized by the 2017 Audie Award and received an Earphones Award from AudioFile magazine. In 2009, he received the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Theatre Award at the Los Angeles NAACP Theatre Awards. In 2022, Wayne State University's Department of Theatre and Dance presented him with the Apple Award for Outstanding Contributions to Theatre in the USA, an honor he shared with Dominique Morisseau. The award was endowed by the Nederlander Family in memory of Sarah Applebaum Nederlander.

Santiago-Hudson has four children: Broderick Santiago and Ruben Santiago III from previous relationships, and Trey and Lily from his marriage to Jeannie Brittan.
