About
Roxanne Hart is an American actress born on July 27, 1952, in Trenton, New Jersey, the eldest of five children born to Joan Irene (née McKee) and Edward J. Hart, Jr. Her father, a biology teacher whose work with NASA science projects required frequent relocation, brought the family to Delaware, Colorado, Georgia, and Long Island during Hart's childhood. She attended Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, New York, and later Webster College before earning her degree from Skidmore College. Acting was not an early ambition; Hart had intended to pursue a career teaching English at the college level until exposure to Greek plays during her college years redirected her toward the stage.
Hart built her early professional foundation with the Syracuse Stage company before making her New York debut in a production of Equus, a role she subsequently reprised on a national tour of the play. Her Broadway career spanned 1975 to 1988 and included appearances in The Devil's Disciple, Loose Ends, Passion, Cheaters, and The Cherry Orchard, among other productions. Her performance in Passion, the U.S. production of British playwright Peter Nichols' work, earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 1983. A Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Play followed in 1985.
Beyond the stage, Hart appeared in supporting film roles in The Verdict (1982) and Oh, God! You Devil (1984) before taking on the role of Brenda Wyatt opposite Christopher Lambert in the 1986 fantasy film Highlander. Additional film credits include Pulse (1988), Once Around (1991), and Moonlight Mile (2002). She also appeared in the television production "Guns at Cyrano's" for Philip Marlowe, Private Investigator in 1986 and starred in a number of made-for-television movies throughout her career.
On television, Hart is perhaps best known for portraying Nurse Camille Shutt on the CBS medical drama Chicago Hope, a role she held from 1994 to 1998. She held recurring roles on the HBO sitcom Dream On, NBC's Medium from 2006 to 2010, and the HBO comedy Hung from 2010 to 2011. In 2016, she joined the second season of the ABC legal drama How to Get Away with Murder in a recurring capacity. Her guest appearances span a wide range of series, including ER, Law & Order, Criminal Minds, Oz, Grey's Anatomy, The Closer, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Hart is married to actor Philip Casnoff, and the couple have two sons.
