About
Roslyn Kind was born on January 9, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York, to Louis Kind and Diana Rosen Streisand Kind, who divorced when Kind was six years old. She is the maternal half-sister of Barbra Streisand. Raised within the Conservative movement of Judaism, she attended temple and yeshiva during her childhood. Her mother had been an opera singer, and her grandfather served as a cantor, both of whom shaped her early interest in singing.
Kind recorded her debut album, Give Me You, within two months of graduating from high school in June 1968. The record was released in January 1969 on RCA Victor, coinciding with her first professional performance at the Hungry I in San Francisco. That same year, she made her New York debut at the Persian Room in the Plaza Hotel, performing before a full house that included Streisand among the audience. A second album, This Is Roslyn Kind, also appeared on RCA Victor in 1969. Her television work began around the same period, with two appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1969 and 1970, as well as a guest spot on a 1969 Charles Aznavour special titled For Me...Formidable.
On April 16, 1977, Kind appeared on Saturday Night Live during its second season, in an episode hosted by Elliott Gould. She continued to build her television résumé over the following decades, with appearances on Gimme a Break! in 1983 and 1984, Throb in 1986, The Howard Stern Show in 1994, and The Nanny in 1996, the latter of which featured her own composition, Light of Love. Additional television credits include The Florence Henderson Show in 2007, you & me in 2013, and the TODAY show on April 2, 2014.
Her film work includes providing vocals for the title song of the 1982 made-for-TV movie Not Just Another Affair, a role in I'm Going to Be Famous in 1983, The Underachievers in 1987, the 1991 made-for-TV movie Switched at Birth, Ladies of the House for Hallmark in 2008, and vocals on the song Hold On for the 2008 film Tru Loved.
Kind's Broadway credit is 3 From Brooklyn, in which she appeared in 1992. Her off-Broadway work includes Show Me Where the Good Times Are, Leader of the Pack, Ferguson the Tailor, and William Finn's Elegies. Over the course of her career she has also toured internationally as a cabaret and concert performer. She appeared in Streisand's 2012 national tour, Back to Brooklyn, and her 2013 European tour, Barbra Streisand LIVE, during which the two half-sisters performed a duet together. Some of Kind's concert productions have been directed by Richard Jay-Alexander, who also serves as Streisand's concert director.
Kind released a new single, Light of Love, on January 17, 2020. Her discography includes Give Me You and This Is Roslyn Kind, both on RCA Victor from 1969, and Come What May, originally released in 1994 on Right Kind Music and reissued with a bonus track in 2007.
