About
Rosemary Ames (December 11, 1906 – April 15, 1988) was an American actress born in Evanston, Illinois, whose career spanned stage work in London, a run of Hollywood films in the early 1930s, and Broadway appearances in 1936 and 1937. Her father, Knowlton L. Ames, served as president of Booth Fisheries Company and owned two newspapers.
Before entering film, Ames built stage experience in London over several years, appearing in productions that included Five Star Final. Her screen career began in 1932 with Love on the Spot, and she took on a lead role the following year in Mr. Quincey of Monte Carlo opposite John Stuart. In 1934 she appeared in three films: I Believed in You, Such Women Are Dangerous, and Pursued. Her most prominent film work came in 1935, when she starred alongside Janet Gaynor and Warner Baxter in One More Spring, appeared opposite Edmund Lowe and Victor McLaglen in The Great Hotel Murder, and shared the screen with Shirley Temple and Joel McCrea in Our Little Girl.
Ames transitioned back to the stage during the mid-1930s, appearing on Broadway in Matrimony Pfd. and Wise Tomorrow between 1936 and 1937.
In her personal life, Ames married E. Ogden Ketting, with whom she had a daughter, Julie Brosseau. She also married British theatre manager Bertie Alexander Meyer on January 6, 1932, in London. On March 28, 1935, she divorced Ketting and married bank executive Abner J. Stilwell the same day. That marriage ended in divorce on October 22, 1937.
