About
Rory Dodd is a Canadian rock vocalist born in Port Dover, Ontario, who appeared on Broadway in 1976 in Rockabye Hamlet. He is the younger brother of voice actor and singer Cal Dodd.
Dodd is widely recognized for his contribution to Bonnie Tyler's 1983 recording "Total Eclipse of the Heart," on which he sang the duet vocal part, delivering the "Turn around, bright eyes" lyrics. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. That same year, Tyler's album Faster Than the Speed of Night, on which Dodd contributed, was released. His work as a lead vocalist produced a chart entry of his own: "Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through" peaked at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
A significant portion of Dodd's recording career has been connected to songwriter and producer Jim Steinman. He contributed backing vocals to multiple Meat Loaf albums, including Bat Out of Hell (1977), Dead Ringer (1981), Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell (1993), and Welcome to the Neighborhood (1995). He also appeared on Steinman's 1981 solo album Bad for Good, singing three songs, though the LP sleeve notes credited him for only two. Dodd additionally served as a backing vocalist in Fire Inc., a Wagnerian rock band that recorded two songs for the 1984 film Streets of Fire.
Beyond his work with Steinman, Dodd contributed backing vocals to a broad range of recording artists across several decades, including Billy Joel's An Innocent Man (1983), Julian Lennon's Valotte (1984), Lou Reed's New Sensations (1984), Celine Dion's Falling into You (1996), and albums by artists including Ted Nugent, Ian Hunter, Air Supply, Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Bon Jovi, and Patty Smyth, among others.
Dodd also worked in television, providing the singing voices for the characters Tex and Rex on the PBS children's series Shining Time Station from 1989 to 1993. He additionally supplied the main voice for a Hungry Hungry Hippos commercial and has done broader voiceover work for advertising. In 2022, Dodd was inducted into the Forest City London Music Awards hall of fame.
