About
Ronald Launcelot Squire (25 March 1886 – 16 November 1958) was an English character actor whose career spanned stage and screen across both sides of the Atlantic. Born in Tiverton, Devon, he was the son of army officer Lt.-Col. Frederick Squirl and his Irish-born wife Mary. Squire was a stage name rather than his birth surname. He was educated at Wellington College and initially pursued journalism before enrolling at RADA to train as an actor.
Squire began his professional acting career in light comedy roles at Liverpool repertory theatre before expanding his work to include West End productions and international engagements. His West End credits included On Approval, The Bread-Winner, All Rights Reserved, Ducks and Drakes, While the Sun Shines, Jane, The Way Things Go, The Iron Duchess, A Penny for a Song, and A Touch of the Sun.
His Broadway career ran from 1917 to 1931 and included appearances in The Sex Fable, Our Betters, and Gamblers All. Originally from England, Squire brought his stage experience to American audiences during this period before continuing his career in Britain.
Alongside his theatre work, Squire appeared in a number of films, among them The Rocking Horse Winner, The Million Pound Note, and Mike Todd's 1956 production of Around the World in 80 Days. In 1914 he married Muriel Martin-Harvey, with whom he had a daughter. Squire died on 16 November 1958 at the age of 72, after falling ill at his home on Great Ormond Street, London.
