About
Ronald Long (30 January 1911 – 23 October 1986) was an English actor born in London who built a career primarily in American television across the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Before relocating to the United States in the late 1940s, he trained and performed at the Old Vic Theatre in London.
Long's Broadway career spanned 1953 to 1957. He appeared as the police inspector in the drama A Pin to See the Peepshow in 1953 and as Dr. Blimber in the comedy Nature's Way in 1957. His film work began with Two Loves in 1961.
On television, Long's most sustained role was that of Evans Baker on the CBS daytime soap opera Love of Life, a part he held for four years. He accumulated numerous guest appearances in 1960s sitcoms, including Get Smart, Hogan's Heroes, I Dream of Jeannie, and Green Acres. On Bewitched he appeared in multiple roles, among them Henry VIII in a two-part episode broadcast in 1971. In the Lost in Space episode "Mutiny in Space," he played Admiral Zahrk, a character preoccupied with a missing goat cheese. Long made three appearances on Perry Mason, one of which featured him as Arthur Hennings, a former Nazi official living under an assumed identity, in the 1961 episode "The Case of the Renegade Refugee," and another as murder victim Franz Hoffer in the 1965 episode "The Case of the Fugitive Fraulein." Additional television credits include Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Batman, The Time Tunnel, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible, Mannix, and Columbo.
Outside of dramatic work, Long appeared in a Stan Freberg advertisement for Sunsweet Pitted Prunes, playing a picky eater who, upon learning the pits had been removed, observed that the prunes were "still rather badly wrinkled, you know." Long died in Burbank, California, at the age of 75.
