Ronald Arthur Silver, born July 2, 1946, in Manhattan to May and Irving Roy Silver, studied at SUNY Buffalo, St. John's University, and Columbia University's Graduate School of International Affairs. He trained as an actor at the Herbert Berghof Studio and The Actors Studio. During the 1990s, he served as president of Actors' Equity. He married Lynne Miller; their children are Adam and Alexandra.

His film credits include "The Arrival," "Romancing the Stone," "Ali," "Silkwood," "Timecop," "Find Me Guilty," "The Entity," "Reversal of Fortune," "Blue Steel," "The Ten," "Silent Rage," "Girl 6," and "Best Friends." On television, he appeared in "The West Wing," "Law & Order," "Hill Street Blues," "Crossing Jordan," "The Practice," "Chicago Hope," "The Rockford Files," and "Wiseguy."

In 1989, he co-founded the Creative Coalition, a political advocacy organization for the entertainment industry. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to the Honorary Delegation accompanying him to Jerusalem in May 2008 for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel. Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in his honor on March 18, 2009.
