About
Roland Joseph Culver (31 August 1900 – 1 March 1984) was an English actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television across six decades. Born in London, England, he attended Highgate School before joining the Royal Air Force, where he served as a pilot from 1918 to 1919. He subsequently trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his professional stage debut in 1924 at Hull Repertory Theatre.
By 1931, Culver had begun appearing in films, where he became recognized for his portrayals of composed English gentlemen. His Broadway career extended from 1953 to 1966, during which he appeared in The Little Hut, Five Finger Exercise, and Ivanov. His performance in Five Finger Exercise took place at the Music Box Theatre in New York City in 1960. His work in Ivanov earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play in 1966.
In 1963, Culver recorded the role of Claudius opposite Paul Scofield's Hamlet in Howard Sackler's production for Caedmon Shakespeare Recordings. During the 1960s he expanded into television work, and in 1974 he appeared in the BBC adaptation of The Pallisers, playing the Duke of Omnium and Gatherum. He retired from performing in 1983 and was awarded an OBE in the 1980 Birthday Honours for services to drama.
Culver also worked as a writer, authoring the play A River Breeze and an autobiography titled Not Quite a Gentleman. He was married twice, first to actress, director, and casting agent Daphne Rye from 1932 to 1946, with whom he had two children, actor Michael Culver and Robin Culver, and then to Nan Hopkins from 1947 until his death. Culver died of a heart attack on 1 March 1984.
