Roland Bottomley was a British-born American stage and film actor whose career spanned several decades on both screen and stage. Born in Liverpool, England, sources vary on his birth year, with some citing 1878, others 1879, and still others 1880. He died in New York early in 1947.
Bottomley relocated to the United States around 1913, initially settling in California, where he began his film career with the Kalem Company. Through the 1920s he worked for several major studios, including Paramount, Fox, Universal, and the production company of Thomas H. Ince. His screen credits from this period include The Green Cloak (1915), The Grip of Evil (1916), The Neglected Wife (1917), The Devil (1921), Modern Marriage (1923), The Dawn of a Tomorrow (1924), and Raffles, the Amateur Cracksman (1925), among others. Following his final film appearance in 1925, he redirected his professional focus entirely to the stage.
His Broadway career extended from 1913 to 1942, encompassing a range of genres and productions. He appeared in the musical Lassie, the comedy A Kiss for Cinderella, and the play Macbeth. Among his dramatic credits were Death Takes a Holiday and The Wookey, the latter a drama produced during the later years of his stage career.
