About
Born May 5, 1944, in Aberystwyth, Wales, Roger Rees was the son of William and Doris Rees. He studied at the Camberwell College of Arts and the Slade School of Fine Art before painting scenery at the Wimbledon Theater in south London, where he turned actor in 1965. Over more than two decades with the Royal Shakespeare Company, he performed in numerous productions and originated the title role in "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby," both in London and on Broadway. He served as associate artistic director of the Bristol Old Vic from 1985 to 1987 and later as artistic director of the Williamstown Theater Festival from 2004 to 2007.
Film credits include "The Prestige," "Frida," "Survivor," "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," "The New World," "The Scorpion King," "The Pink Panther," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "The Invasion," and "Star 80." On television, he appeared in "Grey's Anatomy," "Elementary," "The Good Wife," "The West Wing," "The Middle," "Cheers," and "Oz."
Roger Rees was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2015. Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in his honor on July 15, 2015.
