About
Roger Newman (August 31, 1940 – March 4, 2010) was a British-born American actor and writer who worked across Broadway, daytime television, and soap opera writing. Born in London, he relocated with his family to Montreal following World War II before eventually settling in the United States. He served in the US Army and studied at Columbia University.
Newman's earliest professional work was in radio, which he began as a child. His acting career later extended to the stage, and in 1972 he appeared on Broadway in Butley. His television acting credits included a role as Joe on The Edge of Night in 1967 and multiple stints on Guiding Light, where he appeared from April 1970 through October 1972, returned from February 1973 through April 1975, and made a further appearance from September 1998 through February 1999. It was on Guiding Light that he met his wife, actor and writer Frances Myers.
Newman transitioned into soap opera writing, contributing scripts to several long-running daytime series. He wrote for Another World from 1983 to 1988, One Life to Live from 1991 to 1992, Guiding Light from 1992 to 1999, and Passions from 1999 to 2004. His writing earned significant industry recognition. As part of the Guiding Light writing team, he received a Daytime Emmy Award for Best Writing in 1993, and that same year he earned a Writers Guild of America Award for his work on One Life to Live. He received additional Daytime Emmy nominations for Another World in 1985 and 1989, for Guiding Light in 1999, and for Passions in 2001, 2002, and 2003.
