About

Roddy Maude-Roxby, born Roderick A. Maude-Roxby on 2 April 1930 in London, England, is an English retired actor whose career has spanned stage, film, and television across several decades. He is perhaps most widely recognized for voicing the scheming butler Edgar Balthazar in Walt Disney's animated feature The Aristocats, a role that stands as his sole voice acting credit.

Before establishing himself as a performer, Maude-Roxby was part of a notable creative circle at the Royal College of Art, where he studied alongside David Hockney and Peter Blake. He served as editor of ARK magazine in 1958 and as president of the college's Theatre Group. In 1960, he and Blake mounted a joint exhibition at the Portal Gallery. During this period, Maude-Roxby was among the earliest practitioners of performance art in the United Kingdom, working in the form before it had gained formal recognition as a discipline.

His stage work encompassed both experimental and commercial theater. He appeared on Broadway in 1966 in Help Stamp Out Marriage, and in 1968 he received the Theatre of the Year Award for Best Comic New York for his work as a stand-up comedian. He was a co-creator of improvisational games developed at the Royal Court Theatre and subsequently worked under the name Theatre Machine with Keith Johnstone, pursuing mask work and improvisation for more than forty years.

Maude-Roxby's television credits include appearances on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, Not Only... But Also, The Goodies, and The Establishment. He also collaborated with Michael Palin and Terry Jones on The Complete and Utter History of Britain, a pre-Monty Python series. In 1992, he took on the role of Mercator, an imprisoned alien, in the experimental BBC1 Saturday morning children's program Parallel 9. His film work includes Clint Eastwood's White Hunter Black Heart, in which he played Thompson, and Unconditional Love. In 2012, he appeared in a production of Ibsen's St John's Night at London's Jermyn Street Theatre.
