About

Robert Sean Leonard, born Robert Lawrence Leonard on February 28, 1969, in Westwood, New Jersey, is an American actor whose career has spanned film, television, and stage. He grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where he attended Ridgewood High School before leaving at age 17 to pursue acting. He subsequently studied at Fordham University, the Columbia University School of General Studies, and HB Studio. His professional name derives from his brother Sean, whose name he adopted as a middle name after the Screen Actors Guild advised him to use a stage name, as his birth name was already registered by another actor.

Leonard first gained wide recognition through his film work in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His early screen appearances included The Manhattan Project (1986) and My Best Friend Is a Vampire (1987), before his breakthrough role as Neil Perry in the 1989 drama Dead Poets Society. In 1993 alone, he appeared in three films: Swing Kids, in which he played Peter Müller; the Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing; and Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence. His 1997 television film In the Gloaming, directed by Christopher Reeve, drew considerable critical attention for his performance. From 2004 to 2012, he portrayed Dr. James Wilson in the Fox medical drama House, a role he secured in part through his existing friendship with executive producer Bryan Singer. He later took on a recurring role as Dr. Roger Kadar on Falling Skies from 2013 to 2014, and in 2023 appeared in HBO's The Gilded Age as the Reverend Luke Forte.

On Broadway, Leonard has been active from 1983 through 2017, accumulating credits across drama and musical theater. He is a three-time Tony Award nominee and won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play in 2001 for his portrayal of A. E. Housman in Tom Stoppard's The Invention of Love. That same year, he replaced Craig Bierko as the lead in a revival of The Music Man. He had previously appeared in the New York premiere of Stoppard's Arcadia at Lincoln Center in 1995, playing the role of Valentine. His 2003 Tony nomination came for his performance as Edmund Tyrone in a revival of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night, a production that also featured Philip Seymour Hoffman, Brian Dennehy, and Vanessa Redgrave. In 2011, he co-starred as Paul Verrall in the Broadway revival of Born Yesterday, and in 2017 he appeared in the revival of Sunday in the Park with George as Jules/Bob. Additional Broadway credits include The Violet Hour, Philadelphia, Here I Come!, Breaking the Code, The Speed of Darkness, Candida, Fifth of July, and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Beyond his individual work, Leonard co-founded the New York theater company Malaparte in 1991 alongside Ethan Hawke, James Waterston, Steve Zahn, and Frank Whaley. Hawke had become a close friend of Leonard's through their collaboration on Dead Poets Society. The company was formally dissolved in 2000, with its members citing a desire to spend more time with their families. In 2016, outside of Broadway, Leonard played King Arthur in David Lee's adaptation of Camelot at the Westport Country Playhouse. Leonard married Gabriella Salick in 2008, and the couple have three daughters, born in 2009 and 2012 respectively.
