About

Robert Middlemass (September 3, 1883 – September 10, 1949) was an American stage actor, playwright, and film character actor born in New Britain, Connecticut. After graduating from Harvard University in 1909, he entered the insurance business before leaving it to pursue a career in the theater. He joined the Castle Square Theatre stock company in Boston as an early professional engagement before making his Broadway debut in September 1914 in The Bludgeon at the Maxine Elliott Theatre.

His Broadway career spanned from 1914 to 1935 and included appearances in a range of productions. Among his credits were The Budget, Little Shot, Small Miracle, and Criminal at Large. The most enduring work of his stage career was The Valiant, a one-act melodrama he co-wrote with Holworthy Hall, whose given name was H.E. Porter and who had been Middlemass's college roommate. The play was adapted into a film of the same title in 1929 and again under the title The Man Who Wouldn't Talk in 1940. Beyond its film adaptations, The Valiant gained a lasting presence in amateur and local theater, where it continued to be performed after its initial run.

Around 1935, Middlemass relocated to Los Angeles and transitioned into film work, accumulating more than 100 screen appearances. He frequently portrayed detectives and policemen in these roles. He died in Los Angeles on September 10, 1949, one week after his sixty-sixth birthday.
