About
Robert Miano is an American actor born on September 25, 1942, in New York City, where he was raised in the Southeast Bronx. He is of Italian descent.
Miano's introduction to performing came at age fifteen, when a talent agent passing a Bronx street corner heard him singing with a doo-wop group. That chance encounter led to a recording of "Kingdom Of Love" with the Preludes on the Cub Label, a subsidiary of MGM Records. His path to theater began when he auditioned at an open casting call for the lead rock singer in a production of Satyricon, securing the role. The play was presented at the Stratford Shakespearean Festival in Ontario, Canada. Following that engagement, Miano spent several years in Europe working as a troubadour, singing and playing guitar on streets and in restaurants across the continent.
After returning to New York City, Miano studied method acting under Lee Strasberg and Warren Robertson. It was during this period in the mid-1970s that he attracted the attention of directors including Michael Winner, Howard W. Koch, and Chuck Workman. His Broadway career includes an appearance in 1974 in the play Fame.
Following his relocation to Los Angeles, Miano built an extensive career as a character actor over more than thirty years, accumulating hundreds of feature film and numerous television credits. He became particularly associated with mobster roles. From 1994 to 1995, he portrayed Bronx mob boss Joe Scully on the soap opera General Hospital, playing a character established as the one-time mentor and potential rival to Sonny Corinthos. In 1997, Miano portrayed real-life Bonanno crime family capo Alphonse "Sonny Red" Indelicato in Donnie Brasco, appearing alongside Al Pacino, Michael Madsen, and Johnny Depp. He also co-starred in The Funeral with Christopher Walken, Chris Penn, and Benicio del Toro. On television, Miano played a mobster character named "Frankie Eyes" on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and portrayed real-life Mafia boss Vito Genovese in the 1999 television film Lansky, written by David Mamet.
