About
Robert McWade (January 25, 1872 – January 19, 1938) was an American actor who worked extensively in both stage and film. Born in Buffalo, New York, he was the third member of his family to carry the name Robert McWade, following his father and grandfather. His older brother, Edward McWade, was also a character actor.
McWade began his stage career in 1902 with the Murray Hill Stock Company. Over the following decades, he accumulated at least 38 Broadway productions between 1903 and 1927, appearing in works including She Stoops to Conquer, New Brooms, New Toys, and The Home Towners. His final Broadway appearance came in the 1926 production of Devil in the Cheese, which also featured Bela Lugosi and Fredric March.
Alongside his stage work, McWade built a substantial film career, appearing in 83 productions between 1924 and 1938. Among his screen credits was the 1933 film 42nd Street, which starred Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler.
McWade was married to Minne Lee, and the couple had two sons. He died of heart disease on January 19, 1938, in Culver City, California, at the age of 65.
