About

Robert McQueeney (March 5, 1919 – April 24, 2002) was an American actor born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television. He is particularly remembered for his character work in television productions of the 1950s and 1960s, and later in life became a Roman Catholic priest.

McQueeney's Broadway career ran from 1951 to 1954 and included two productions: Billy Budd, which opened in 1951, and Fragile Fox, which followed in 1954. These stage credits preceded a sustained period of work in Hollywood television.

On television, McQueeney accumulated guest appearances across numerous series, among them Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Decoy, Lawman, 77 Sunset Strip, Bronco, and The Alaskans. In 1959, he took on the role of Edwin Booth — the 19th-century actor and brother of Abraham Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth — in the Colt .45 episode "The Man Who Loved Lincoln" on ABC. That same year he appeared in the Perry Mason episode "The Case of the Lost Last Act," playing a murderer named Michael Dwight. His sole leading role in a series came with the Warner Bros./ABC World War II drama The Gallant Men, which aired from 1962 to 1963, where he portrayed newspaper reporter Conley Wright. His film work included supporting roles in Portrait of a Mobster (1961) and The Glory Guys (1965). Alongside his acting career, McQueeney also worked as a golf pro and instructor.

McQueeney was previously married to Patricia McQueeney, with whom he had three children. Patricia McQueeney was a model and actress who appeared regularly on NBC's Today Show during the 1950s and later operated a talent agency, McQueeney Management, which handled the career of Harrison Ford for a number of years. Following the annulment of his marriage, McQueeney was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest. For the final twenty years of his life, he served as spiritual director for the Padre Pio Foundation of America in Cromwell, Connecticut, and contributed numerous written articles to the organization, much of which remains accessible online.
