About
Robert Mawdesley (c. 1900 – 30 September 1953) was an English actor whose career spanned stage, film, and radio. He is best remembered as the original voice of Walter Gabriel on the BBC Radio serial The Archers.
Mawdesley received his education at Gresham's School in Holt, Norfolk, where he developed an early interest in acting through participation in school productions. His professional career was concentrated primarily on stage work, which remained the foundation of his output for most of his life. In 1929, he appeared on Broadway in the play The Middle Watch, marking his presence in American theater during that period. His film work was limited; his sole screen credit was a role in Basil Dean's 1933 production Loyalties.
In 1951, Mawdesley joined the cast of The Archers, a daily radio serial that began broadcasting on BBC Radio on 1 January of that year. He originated the role of Walter Gabriel, a smallholder in the fictional village of Ambridge whose function in the programme was largely comedic. The character was associated with the catchphrase "My old pal, my old beauty." Mawdesley held the role until his death on 30 September 1953.
