About
Robert Marien, born May 5, 1955, in Quebec, Canada, is an actor, singer, and songwriter whose career has spanned stage, film, and television across multiple countries and languages. He is best known for his extensive work in the musical Les Misérables, in which he has portrayed Jean Valjean in both English and French productions staged in Montreal, Paris, New York City, and London.
Marien's association with Les Misérables began with the Original Montreal cast production, and he subsequently took on the role of Jean Valjean in the Paris revival cast in 1990. His Broadway appearance came in 1987, and he later reprised the role in the West End. He was also selected to represent France in the international lineup of performers at the 10th anniversary concert of Les Misérables, participating in the encore alongside Valjeans from productions around the world. Following his work in these productions, he recorded the album Broadway-Montréal.
Beyond Les Misérables, Marien has performed in Notre Dame de Paris, playing the role of Claude Frollo. In 2005, he was part of the cast that toured Korea and Japan. That tour was revived in English in late 2014, running through February 2015, and returned to Korea in October 2015 in a French-language production that continued into early 2016. In 2019 and 2021, he performed the role of Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar in Tokyo, Japan.
Marien's screen work includes the long-running television series Lance et Compte, which aired from 1986 to 2010, as well as the television production Mensonges in 2015. His credits across stage and screen establish him as a prominent figure in both the Francophone entertainment world and the broader international musical theatre community.
