About
Robert Ludlum (May 25, 1927 – March 12, 2001) was an American theatrical performer, producer, and author. Born in New York City to Margaret (née Wadsworth) and George Hartford Ludlum, he attended the Rectory School, Cheshire Academy, and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Drama in 1951. He also served in the United States Marine Corps before pursuing a career in theater.
Ludlum appeared on Broadway between 1953 and 1956, with credits including The Strong Are Lonely and Saint Joan. Alongside his performing work, he was active as a theatrical producer, operating shows at the Grant Lee theater in Fort Lee, New Jersey during the 1950s. From 1960 to 1970, he managed and produced shows at the Playhouse on the Mall at Bergen Mall in Paramus, New Jersey.
Ludlum went on to become an author of 27 thriller novels, best known as the creator of the Jason Bourne character, introduced in the original Bourne Trilogy. Estimates place the total number of copies of his books in print between 300 million and 500 million, with translations published in 33 languages across 40 countries. He also published works under the pseudonyms Jonathan Ryder and Michael Shepherd. During the 1970s, he lived in Leonia, New Jersey, where he devoted several hours each day to writing.
Numerous Ludlum novels were adapted for film and television, including The Osterman Weekend, The Holcroft Covenant, The Apocalypse Watch, and the Bourne films starring Matt Damon. The Bourne Ultimatum received three Academy Awards in 2008. Covert One: The Hades Factor, co-written with Gayle Lynds, originated from a short treatment Ludlum wrote for NBC before developing into a book and miniseries. His novel The Matarese Circle was inspired by theories surrounding the Trilateral Commission and was published shortly after that organization was founded.
Ludlum died of a heart attack on March 12, 2001, at his home in Naples, Florida, while recovering from severe burns sustained in a fire on February 10, 2001. Following his death, the estate's company Ludlum Entertainment signed a ten-year video game rights agreement with Vivendi Universal Games in 2005, and those rights were subsequently transferred to Electronic Arts on February 2, 2009.
