Robert Gwilym is a Welsh actor born on 2 December 1956 in Neath, Glamorgan, Wales. He grew up in a family that operated a chain of lingerie shops, and his brother, Mike Gwilym, also pursued a career as an actor.

Gwilym made his Broadway debut in 1991 in Dancing at Lughnasa, a credit that earned him both a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance and a Theatre World Special Award, both in 1992.

His screen career spans a wide range of television productions, including The Bill, Ultimate Force, Soldier Soldier, Coronation Street, London's Burning, and The Professionals. He appeared in a single episode of Casualty in 1990 before returning to the series in a recurring capacity, playing Max Gallagher from 1998 to 2002. The television adaptation of Dancing at Lughnasa also numbers among his screen credits. In 1987, Gwilym appeared in On the Black Hill, a film based on Bruce Chatwin's novel, in which he starred alongside his brother Mike.

Beyond stage and screen, Gwilym has worked extensively in radio, including a role as Corporal Carrot in the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel Guards! Guards! In 2013, he took on the role of Frank Bowman in Dark Road, the debut play written by crime novelist Ian Rankin.
