About
Robert Samuel Fields, born on July 10, 1934, in Brookline, Massachusetts, is an American actor whose career has spanned film, television, and Broadway. The son of a restaurateur, Fields pursued formal training at Carnegie Mellon University and the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, and he later became a life member of The Actors Studio.
Fields made his film debut in 1958, appearing alongside Steve McQueen in the science fiction horror film The Blob, in which he played Tony Gressette. The two became friends through the production, and Fields returned to the film decades later, contributing commentary when The Criterion Collection released it on DVD in 2000.
His Broadway career took shape in the late 1960s. Fields appeared in The Persecution and Assassination of Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade and The Cuban Thing, with both credits falling between 1967 and 1968.
Fields continued working in film throughout the following decades. He played Joel in the 1969 drama They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, and portrayed Will in the 1970 film Cover Me Babe. In 1987, he co-starred with Sally Kirkland in the drama Anna, taking on the role of Daniel. Among his later credits is the role of Jay Smiley in The Souler Opposite, released in 1998.
On June 26, 1983, Fields married Betty-Jane Robbins, at that time a marketing director for trade books at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in San Diego. The ceremony took place at the Fairview Country Club in Greenwich, Connecticut, and was performed by Rabbi H. Leonard Poller.
