Robert Emmett Keane (March 4, 1883 – July 2, 1981) was an American actor born in New York, New York, whose career spanned stage, film, and television across several decades.
Keane's stage career began in the 1910s, with his first Broadway appearance coming in The Passing Show of 1914. He remained active on Broadway through 1950, accumulating credits that included the musical The Only Girl, the play Broadway Interlude, Hotel Alimony, Facing the Music, and Page Pygmalion, among other productions. His theatrical work extended beyond New York to London as well, with his stage activity continuing through the mid-1930s.
His film career launched in 1930 and spanned approximately twenty-five years, during which he appeared in between 170 and 200 films. Toward the end of his acting life, Keane also made several appearances in television.
Keane was married twice. His first wife was Muriel Inetta Window, an opera singer, vaudeville actress, and 1913 Peacock Girl with the Ziegfeld Follies; the two married around 1916 and divorced in 1920. The following year he married actress Claire Whitney, and the couple remained together until her death in 1969. Keane retired from acting in 1958 and died on July 2, 1981. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles beside his wife Claire, whose grave is unmarked.
