About

Robert Duncan McNeill, born November 9, 1964, in North Carolina, is an American actor, director, and producer. He grew up in Atlanta and trained at the Juilliard School in New York City before launching a career that has spanned stage, television, and film.

McNeill's early professional work included the role of Charlie Brent on the daytime drama All My Children and a part in the feature film Masters of the Universe alongside Courteney Cox. He also appeared in "A Message From Charity," an episode of the 1980s revival of The Twilight Zone. His Broadway career ran from 1988 to 1990 and included two notable productions. He appeared alongside Stockard Channing in Six Degrees of Separation, and he took on the role of Jack in the national touring company of Into the Woods, the Tony Award-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim. Following his stage work, he returned to Los Angeles to pursue television opportunities, accumulating guest appearances on series including L.A. Law, Quantum Leap, and Murder, She Wrote. In 1992, he was a cast member on the short-lived series Going to Extremes and appeared in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The First Duty," playing Nick Locarno, a Starfleet Academy cadet who pressures fellow students into concealing a serious incident. He reprised that character in 2023 in the fourth season of Star Trek: Lower Decks. His stage credits also include the role of Zebulon in a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Paper Mill Playhouse.

McNeill became widely recognized for his television role as Lieutenant Tom Paris on Star Trek: Voyager, which began in 1995. The character shared notable backstory elements with Nick Locarno, the role he had played on The Next Generation three years earlier. He has since made guest appearances on series such as The Outer Limits and Crossing Jordan.

Alongside his acting work, McNeill built a substantial career as a director and producer. He began directing during his time on Voyager and went on to helm episodes of numerous series, including Dawson's Creek, Everwood, Star Trek: Enterprise, Dead Like Me, The O.C., One Tree Hill, Supernatural, Desperate Housewives, and Medium. He also wrote, produced, and directed two short films, The Battery, starring Joshua Jackson, and 9mm of Love, both of which won awards. In 2007, he directed the season-five premiere of Las Vegas and the pilot of Samantha Who?, then joined the NBC series Chuck as a producer-director, overseeing many episodes including the first television broadcast presented entirely in three dimensions. He served as executive producer and director of Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce across all five of its seasons beginning in 2013. His subsequent credits as executive producer and director include The Gifted on Fox, the Disney+ series Turner & Hooch in 2021, and the SYFY series Resident Alien, which entered its fourth season as of 2019. Additional directing credits from 2022 to 2024 include So Help Me Todd, True Lies, and Alert: Missing Persons Unit.

In May 2020, McNeill and his Voyager co-star Garrett Wang launched the podcast The Delta Flyers, in which they discuss episodes of the series. The podcast expanded to cover episodes of Deep Space Nine, with Armin Shimerman and Terry Farrell joining as regular hosts. McNeill has three children from his first marriage to Carol, which ended in divorce in 2015. In 2005, he directed his daughter Taylor in a small role in the Summerland episode "The Pleiades." His son Kyle works as a singer-songwriter. McNeill married Rebecca Jayne McNeill on March 7, 2021, in Vancouver, Canada.
