About
Robert Drouet (March 27, 1870 – August 17, 1914) was an American actor and playwright born in Clinton, Iowa. Drouet is believed to have performed under a stage name. In October 1897 he married Mildred Loring, daughter of M. A. Loring. He died in New York City from heart disease.
Drouet began his theatrical career at the age of sixteen when he joined a theatrical company. He subsequently formed his own Shakespearean repertoire company and spent two years performing leading roles alongside Robert Downing. He then created the role of General Delarouche in Paul Kaubar before taking on the part of Citizen Pierre in a Charles Coghlan play of the same name in 1899. The following year he appeared in a four-act drama based on Paul Leicester Ford's novel Janice Meredith, in which he played the lead role of Colonel Jack Brereton opposite Mary Mannering in her debut in the title role. The production opened in 1900.
Drouet's Broadway career spanned from 1899 to 1913 and included a notable association with playwright Clyde Fitch. He originated the role of John Austin in Fitch's The Girl With the Green Eyes, which ran 108 performances at the Savoy Theatre in New York beginning in 1902. He also gave 89 performances of The Woman in the Case at the Herald Square Theatre in 1905. In August 1903, between these engagements, Drouet served as leading man at Denver's Elitch Theatre for four weekly productions, with Percy Haswell as his leading lady.
His stage work continued across a range of productions throughout the following years. He appeared in The Measure of a Man in 1906, Genesee of the Hills in 1907, The Mills of the Gods by George Broadhurst in 1907, and The Stronger Sex with Annie Russell in 1908. In 1909 he appeared in The Conflict, and in 1910 he took part in Madame X. His Broadway credits also included the revue Marie Dressler's All Star Gambol, His Wife by His Side, The Marriage-not, The Fatted Calf, and The Foolish Virgin.
In addition to his work as a performer, Drouet authored seven plays: Doris, which was produced in New York in 1895 and revived in 1899; The White Czar; Montana; Tomorrow; An Idyll of Virginia; Fra Diano; and Captain Bob.
