Robert Dowdell

Robert Dowdell (March 10, 1932 – January 23, 2018) was an American actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television across several decades. Born in Park Ridge, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, he attended Parker High School before pursuing higher education at Wesleyan University and the University of Chicago. He subsequently enlisted in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, and it was after his discharge from military service that he turned his attention to acting, studying under Wynn Handman.

Dowdell's early professional work brought him to Broadway, where he appeared in productions between 1956 and 1960. His stage credits included the play Time Limit!, the comedy Viva Madison Avenue!, Little Me, and Lovers.

His transition to television came through a connection with playwright Leslie Stevens, who later created the Western series Stoney Burke. Stevens cast Dowdell in the recurring role of Cody Bristol on that program. Dowdell subsequently landed the role for which he became most widely recognized: Lieutenant Commander Chip Morton in the science fiction series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, which ran from 1964 to 1968. He continued working in stage, film, and television productions for approximately thirty years before retiring in 1995.

In his personal life, Dowdell was married to actress Sheila Connolly from 1965 until their divorce in 1979. He had no children. He died of natural causes on January 23, 2018, in Coldwater, Michigan, at the age of 85.
