About
Robert Cuccioli is an American actor and singer born on May 3, 1958, in Hempstead, New York. He attended St. Mary's High School in Manhasset, New York, before enrolling at St. John's University in Jamaica, New York, where he earned a degree in Finance. In the early 1980s, he worked as a financial consultant at E. F. Hutton while simultaneously beginning his performing career at the Off-Broadway Light Opera of Manhattan. Over three years with that company, he advanced from ensemble work to principal roles, including Count Danilo in The Merry Widow, the Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance, and Captain Corcoran in H.M.S. Pinafore.
Cuccioli's stage career expanded into national touring productions before his Broadway debut. In 1987, he starred as Lancelot du Lac in U.S. and Canadian national tours of Camelot alongside Richard Harris. His Broadway debut came in 1993, when he joined Les Misérables as Javert, a role he continued in as a replacement through early January 1995. He then transitioned into rehearsals for the pre-Broadway national tour of Jekyll & Hyde, which would lead to his most celebrated stage work. In 1997, Cuccioli originated the dual title roles of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde on Broadway, earning a Tony Award nomination and winning the Joseph Jefferson Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, and the Fany Award. His run in Jekyll & Hyde on Broadway extended through 1999.
On September 26, 2005, Cuccioli starred as Dr. Johnson in a special benefit performance of On the Twentieth Century at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Beginning August 7, 2012, he returned to Broadway when he took over from Patrick Page in the dual role of Norman Osborn and his alter ego the Green Goblin in the rock musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, remaining with the production through 2014.
Beyond Broadway, Cuccioli built an extensive Off-Broadway and regional theatre record. His notable Off-Broadway credits include Nathan in the 1990 revival of The Rothschilds, the 1991 Kander and Ebb revue And the World Goes 'Round — for which he received an Outer Critics Circle Award — and Macheath in The Threepenny Opera in 2000. He played Karl Streber in Temporary Help in 2002, appeared in Mirette with York Theatre in 2005, and performed in the revue Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris in 2006. In 2019, he played the title role in Caesar and Cleopatra at Theatre Row for The Gingold Theatrical Group, and appeared for the same company as Sir George Crofts in Mrs. Warren's Profession in 2021. His 2022 off-Broadway work included the role of Cornelius "Con" Melody in A Touch of the Poet at Irish Repertory Theatre.
Cuccioli's regional theatre credits span decades and numerous institutions. At the Goodspeed Opera House, he appeared in Ankles Aweigh in 1988. He played Jud Fry in Oklahoma! at the Paper Mill Playhouse in 1992 and the title role in the Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit musical Phantom at the Westchester Broadway Theater in 1992–93, a role he later reprised. Additional Paper Mill Playhouse credits include King Marchan in Victor/Victoria in 2000, Nick Arnstein in Funny Girl in 2001, Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music in 2003, and Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls in 2004, with Karen Ziemba and Kate Baldwin. He played Archibald Craven in The Secret Garden at the Sacramento Music Circus in 1999 and The Actor in Enter the Guardsman at the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival in 1999, a role he repeated Off-Broadway in 2000. At The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, his credits include the title role in Macbeth in 2004, Brutus in Julius Caesar in 2005, and Antonio Salieri in Amadeus in 2008. In 2007, he played Claudius in Hamlet at The Lansburgh Theatre in Washington, D.C., with the Shakespeare Theatre Company, and appeared in pre-Broadway tryouts of Lone Star Love in Seattle, starring Randy Quaid, though the Broadway run was cancelled. That same year he played the title character in Man of La Mancha at the White Plains Performing Arts Center. In 2008, he returned to that venue as King Arthur in Camelot and starred in Conor McPherson's The Seafarer at George Street Playhouse. In 2009, he starred in Thom Thomas's A Moon to Dance By at the Pittsburgh Playhouse and George Street Playhouse alongside Jane Alexander, and played John Dickinson in 1776 at the Paper Mill Playhouse, a role he reprised at Ford's Theatre in 2012. Also in 2012, he played Anatoly Sergievsky in Chess at Lincoln Center. In 2015, he starred as Mayer Rothschild in Rothschild & Sons with York Theatre. In 2023, he played Judge Turpin in The Muny's production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Cuccioli has also directed for the stage. In 2003, he directed The Glass Menagerie at The Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey, and he has directed productions of Jekyll & Hyde at Houston's Theatre Under the Stars, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, and the Westchester Broadway Theatre.
His television work includes appearances on Sliders in 1999, Baywatch in 1997, The Guiding Light, All My Children, and One Life to Live. His film credits include Woody Allen's Celebrity in 1998, Operation Delta Force 3: Clear Target in 1999, Heroic Times, and The Stranger. In 2012, he released his first solo album, The Look of Love, a collection of standards from the 1930s and 1940s. He has been in a relationship with actress Laila Robins since 2000.
