About
Robert Conness (1867/68–1941) was an American actor who worked across stage, vaudeville, and film over a career spanning several decades. Born in La Salle County, Illinois, he entered the theatre in 1894 and went on to establish himself as a presence in both Broadway productions and the early silent film industry. He was married to actress Helen Strickland.
Conness made his Broadway debut in 1904 and continued appearing on the New York stage through 1936. His Broadway credits included The Bootleggers, A Woman of Destiny, Robert Emmet, Steadfast, and The Uninvited Guest, among other productions. Prior to and alongside his stage work, he also performed in vaudeville.
In addition to his theatrical career, Conness pursued work in silent film beginning in 1910. His screen credits included Her First Appearance, Bootles' Baby, and Monsieur, all from the early years of his film work. He appeared in a substantial number of short films throughout the 1910s, among them Children Who Labor, The Witching Hour, and A Message to Garcia. His feature-length film credits included Children of Eve and The Heart of the Hills. He made his final film appearance in 1918, with A Pair of Sixes among his last screen roles.
