About

Robert Anthony Carricart (January 18, 1917 – March 3, 1993) was a French-American actor whose career spanned theatre, film, and television. Born in Bordeaux, France, he emigrated to the United States with his mother at the age of three. At sixteen, he was taken to Spain by an uncle and aunt, and he returned to the United States shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. After serving in the Army during World War II, Carricart initially intended to pursue a career as a playwright, enrolling in a playwriting class at the Dramatic Workshop in New York under the G.I. Bill.

His path shifted toward performance, and in 1947 he made his Broadway debut playing Thyreus in Antony and Cleopatra. Over the following years he appeared in several additional Broadway productions, including King Richard II, Captain Brassbound's Conversion, and The Rose Tattoo, with his stage work continuing through 1951. Fluency in French, Spanish, and Italian proved an asset as he transitioned from the New York stage to Hollywood.

Carricart's screen career began in 1950 with appearances in the documentary series Believe it or Not. He subsequently guest-starred in a wide range of television programs, among them The Untouchables, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Combat!, Columbo, The Andy Griffith Show, Perry Mason, Bonanza, Get Smart, Have Gun Will Travel, Bat Masterson, M Squad, Mr. Lucky, The Time Tunnel, Tales of Wells Fargo, Man with a Camera, Branded, and Rawhide. Regarding Rawhide, Carricart was originally cast as George Washington Wishbone in the CBS western's pilot, though the episode was never aired and Paul Brinegar assumed the role for the series itself.

Film producer Hal B. Wallis signed Carricart, and in 1963 he appeared as Jose Garcia in Fun in Acapulco, the Elvis Presley vehicle. His other film credits included Robin and the 7 Hoods, Blueprint for Robbery, Dime with a Halo, Follow That Dream, Blood on the Arrow, Apache Uprising, Black Spurs, and Villa Rides. In 1966, Carricart joined the cast of the NBC action drama T.H.E. Cat, taking on the recurring role of Pepe Cordoza, a nightclub owner and gypsy.

Carricart died in Los Angeles, California, in March 1993 at the age of 76.
