About
Robb Sapp, born June 1, 1978, is an American actor and singer whose work spans Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional theatre. He is also credited at times under the names Rob Sapp and Robbie Sapp.
Sapp was raised in Solon, Ohio, where his father Robert Sapp and uncle William Sapp performed together in a band called Fully Assembled, and his mother operated an Italian food catering business. Before pursuing a professional career in theatre, he held a job at Sea World of Ohio, where he worked in costume as a whale alongside Marc Sumerak. He went on to study at Syracuse University, participating in productions of Damn Yankees, Anything Goes, and Much Ado About Nothing, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Following graduation, Music Theater of Wichita recruited him, and he appeared there in Singin' in the Rain, Evita, and The Pajama Game before relocating to New York City.
His early professional credits included the national tour of Saturday Night Fever, in which he played Bobby C. In 2003, he originated the role of Tank in the Off-Broadway production of Zanna, Don't!, a role he reprised in a 2014 revival of the show. The following year he originated the role of Turkey in the Off-Broadway production of Johnny Guitar and played Tripp Barrington in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Barrington Stage Company.
Sapp joined the Broadway company of Wicked in late 2004 as an understudy for the role of Boq, and from October 11, 2005 through August 8, 2006 he starred in that role. In August 2009, he stepped into the Broadway production of Shrek the Musical, replacing John Tartaglia in the roles of Pinocchio and the Magic Mirror, and remained with the production through December 2009. His Broadway career, which spanned from 1997 to 2008, also included credits in The Lion King and SIX: The Musical.
Off Broadway, Sapp appeared in Happiness at Lincoln Center Theater's Mitzi E. Newhouse in February 2009. In regional theatre, he played Lon Smith in Meet Me in St. Louis at The Muny in St. Louis in 2009.
