About

Richard "Skeets" Gallagher was an American actor born on July 28, 1891, in Terre Haute, Indiana. The nickname Skeets, a shortened form of mosquito, was given to him in childhood in reference to his habit of breaking into sudden, rapid sprints. A physical curiosity accompanied him throughout his life: his naturally blond hair began showing gray when he was sixteen, though his eyes remained blue.

Gallagher pursued his formal education at Rose Polytechnic Institute and Indiana University, where he studied first civil engineering and then law before abandoning academic pursuits for the stage. His entry into performance came through writing a one-act skit that he brought to a local theatre group, and from that beginning he moved into vaudeville work before eventually transitioning to both Broadway and film.

His Broadway career spanned from 1922 to 1945 and included appearances in a range of productions. Among his credits were the musicals Lucky, The Magnolia Lady, and Marjorie, as well as the productions The City and Good Night, Ladies. Gallagher also signed with Paramount Pictures during this period, extending his career into film. He appeared in Frank Capra's first feature, the 1927 silent film For the Love of Mike, a production now classified as a lost film, and went on to work in several early sound films as the industry transitioned away from silent pictures.

Outside of his professional work, Gallagher was active in political life, campaigning in 1932 for the reelection of President Herbert Hoover. He died on May 22, 1955, in Santa Monica, California, following a heart attack.
