About

Richard Riehle is an American character actor born on May 12, 1948, in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. His father, Herbert John Riehle, served as an assistant postmaster and lived from 1921 to 1961, and his mother, Mary Margaret Riehle, née Walsh, worked as a nurse. Riehle pursued his education at the University of Notre Dame before earning an MFA from the University of Minnesota.

His professional acting career began at the Meadow Brook Theatre in Rochester, Michigan, and he was performing regional theatre in the Pacific Northwest when he landed his first film role, appearing in the John Wayne picture Rooster Cogburn. Over the course of his career, Riehle has accumulated credits in more than 400 films, television productions, and other projects.

Riehle made his presence felt on Broadway between 1986 and 2002, appearing in three productions: Execution of Justice, The Iceman Cometh, and The Man Who Had All the Luck. These stage credits represent a sustained engagement with theatrical work alongside his extensive screen career.

In film, Riehle is perhaps most recognized for his role as Tom Smykowski in Office Space, a character who describes himself as a people person and functions as an intermediary between engineers and customers at the software company Initech. His other film appearances include the ranch hand Carlson in Of Mice and Men in 1992, a guard whose lapse allows Harrison Ford's character to escape custody in The Fugitive in 1993, Principal Beasely in Jury Duty in 1995, Executive Decision in 1996, Mercury Rising in 1998, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo in 1999, and Wedding Crashers in 2005.

On television, Riehle held the recurring role of Walt Finnerty on Grounded for Life from 2001 to 2005. He appeared multiple times across the Star Trek franchise, including the role of Batai in the Next Generation episode "The Inner Light." Additional television credits include guest appearances on NCIS, The West Wing, and The Middle. Riehle has also portrayed Santa Claus in eight separate projects, spanning five films, two television series, and one television movie.
