About
Richard Ridgely (1869–1949) was an American actor and film director whose career spanned both the stage and the silent film era. He maintained an active presence in the entertainment industry across several decades, working in two distinct mediums over the course of his professional life.
Ridgely's Broadway career extended from 1897 to 1906, during which he appeared in a number of musical productions. Among his stage credits was a starring role in H.M.S. Pinafore, the celebrated Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. He also appeared in Three Little Lambs, The French Maid, and The Spring Chicken, accumulating a range of musical theater experience over his nearly decade-long presence on Broadway.
Following his stage work, Ridgely transitioned into the silent film industry, where he took on roles as both an actor and a director. His screen appearances during this period included Ranson's Folly, Eugene Aram, and Olive's Greatest Opportunity, all released in 1915. He continued working in film through subsequent years, with credits including The Martyrdom of Philip Strong and The Heart of the Hills in 1916, and Pride in 1917. His work during the silent era is documented in Rex Ingram: Hollywood's Rebel of the Silver Screen, a 2013 volume by Leonhard Gmür.
