About
Richard Montoya is an American actor, director, producer, playwright, screenwriter, comedian, and co-founding member of the San Francisco-based performance troupe Culture Clash. Born in San Diego, California in 1959, Montoya grew up in a household shaped by his parents' involvement in the United Farm Workers Movement during the 1970s and 1980s. That upbringing, along with the influence of his father, activist José Montoya, directed him toward a career centered on social and political change through artistic expression. His theatrical work addresses racism, immigration, discrimination, and questions of identity within Latin-American communities in the United States.
Montoya pursued his training at California State University, Sacramento and at the American Conservatory Theater. He also worked with Luis Valdez's El Teatro Campesino and participated in the Sundance Institute's Writers and Directors Lab, through which he received two Annenberg Fellowships. A 2007 Sundance grant supported his adaptation of the Culture Clash play Water & Power into a film, which was released in 2013.
On May 5, 1984, Montoya joined Ric Salinas, Herbert Sigüenza, José Antonio Burciaga, Marga Gómez, and Monica Palacios in founding Culture Clash, a performance troupe originating in the Mission District of San Francisco. The group set out to produce works of political satire engaging with multiculturalism, immigration, and civil rights, operating in connection with the United Farm Workers and the Chicano Movement. Culture Clash's output has taken the form of full-length plays and comedic short works, including A Bowl of Beings, Chavez Ravine, and Culture Clash in AmeriCCa. The troupe's 2003 production of Chavez Ravine drew mixed critical responses, with the Los Angeles Times citing a lack of depth, though audience members described it as the group's most important play. A 2015 revival of the same work received similarly mixed but somewhat more favorable notices.
Alongside his work with Culture Clash, Montoya has written independently for institutions including Berkeley Rep, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the San Diego Repertory Theatre. His solo credits as a writer include the play Water & Power, first produced in 2006 and later adapted into the 2013 film he also directed; American Night: The Ballad of Juan José, a play that debuted at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2010; and The River, a play from 2013. American Night received generally positive critical attention, with reviewers describing it as fun and thoughtful. The 2013 film Water & Power holds an average rating of 3.6 out of 5 based on 152 ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with 67 percent of audience members rating it favorably. Montoya also served as a staff writer on the first season of NBC's Southland and appeared in Jared and Jerusha Hess's 2006 film Nacho Libre.
His Broadway career spanned from 1993 to 2006 and included appearances in Kiss of the Spider Woman, Man of La Mancha, and Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life. Montoya's personal and professional papers are held at the California State University, Northridge Special Collections and Archives in the University Library.
