About
Richard Masur, born November 20, 1948, in New York City, is an American actor whose career spans stage, film, and television across more than five decades. The son of Claire Masur, a high school counselor, and Jesse Masur, a pharmacist, he grew up in a Jewish household and attended P.S. 28, Walt Whitman Junior High School, and Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, New York. He has a sister, Judith Masur, and is married to Eileen Henry.
Masur pursued formal training at the Yale School of Drama, working toward an MFA in acting, and established himself on stage before transitioning to film and television work in the 1970s. His Broadway career extended from 1973 to 2024 and included appearances in Democracy, Lucky Guy, Prayer for the French Republic, and The Changing Room. In December 2009, he also appeared off-Broadway in Dust, playing the role of Martin Stone.
His television work began gaining traction in the mid-1970s with recurring roles on multiple series simultaneously. He played Nick Lobo on Rhoda from 1974 to 1977, David Kane on One Day at a Time from 1975 to 1976, and appeared on Hot l Baltimore in 1975. Early guest credits included episodes of All in the Family, The Waltons, and an NBC sitcom pilot, Bumpers, in 1977. In 1981, he took on the role of a child molester in the television film Fallen Angel, followed the next year by his portrayal of the dog handler Clark in the horror and science fiction film The Thing. He appeared as part of the ensemble cast in the 1990 television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's It, playing adult Stanley Uris. Beginning in January 2006, he joined the soap opera All My Children in a recurring capacity, and from 2016 to 2018 he played Edward L. L. Moore on Younger. His television guest appearances have included M*A*S*H, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Hawaii Five-O, Happy Days, Picket Fences, Matlock, Murphy Brown, Law & Order, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, and Transparent.
Among his film credits, Masur appeared opposite Corey Haim in the 1988 comedy License to Drive, playing the father of Haim's character. In 1994, he portrayed a character modeled on Jewish American spy Jonathan Pollard in French director Éric Rochant's Les Patriotes. Over the course of his screen career he has appeared in more than 40 films.
Beyond performing, Masur served two terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1995 to 1999.
