About
Richard Lupino (October 29, 1929 – February 9, 2005) was an American actor of British parentage who worked in film, stage, and television, and was a member of the theatrical Lupino family. He was born in Hollywood, California, to British actor Wallace Lupino and his wife Rose. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in July 1945, and later served in the Korean War as a medic with the rank of corporal.
Lupino made his film debut at the age of ten, playing the title role in the 1940 British production Just William. He went on to appear in a handful of films between 1940 and 1973. His stage work extended across multiple countries, encompassing Broadway, regional theater, productions in London, and performances in Sydney, Australia. On American television, he was a frequent presence from the 1950s through the 1970s, and from 1972 to 1977 he portrayed Earl Goodman in the Australian television serial Number 96.
His Broadway career spanned from 1956 to 1980 and included appearances in Amadeus, Conduct Unbecoming, the play Major Barbara, and the play Sherlock Holmes. Beyond performing, Lupino was a founding member of the Charles Laughton Shakespeare Group and collaborated on television scripts with his cousin, the actress and director Ida Lupino. In 2002, his play The Evening Shift was produced off-off-Broadway and was subsequently optioned for film.
Lupino was married to Pandora Bronson Lupino. He died on February 9, 2005, at the age of 75, from complications related to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
