About

Richard Lewine (July 28, 1910 – May 19, 2005) was an American composer, songwriter, and television producer born in New York City. He attended Columbia College before launching a career that spanned Broadway composition and television production across several decades.

Lewine's Broadway work began in 1934 when he contributed songs to the revue Fools Rush In. His other stage credits include the musicals The Fireman's Flame and Naughty Naught '00, as well as the revue Make Mine Manhattan, which opened in 1948 following his service in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II.

Beyond Broadway, Lewine built a substantial career in television production during the 1950s and 1960s. Among his television projects were productions of Cinderella, starring Julie Andrews, and Aladdin, which featured music by Cole Porter. He also produced the Young People's Concerts telecasts on CBS and composed the music for the ABC series Hootenanny in 1963. In 1965, Lewine won an Emmy Award for producing the television special My Name Is Barbra, starring Barbra Streisand.

Following the death of composer Richard Rodgers in 1979, Lewine served as managing director of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization.

In his personal life, Lewine married Mary Haas in 1945, and the couple had two children, Cornelia and Peter. After Haas died in 1968, he married Elizabeth Rivers. Lewine died of natural causes at his Manhattan home on May 19, 2005.
