About
Richard Franz Joseph Heuberger was born on 18 June 1850 in Graz, Austria, the son of a bandage manufacturer, and died on 28 October 1914 in Vienna. An Austrian composer, music critic, and teacher, he is credited on Broadway with the musical The Opera Ball, an adaptation of his operetta Der Opernball.
Heuberger did not pursue music from the outset. He first studied engineering before abandoning that path in 1876 to dedicate himself to musical training. He enrolled at the Graz Conservatory, where Robert Fuchs was among his teachers, before relocating to Vienna to continue his career. In Vienna he took on a series of prominent choral and administrative roles, serving as chorus master of the Wiener Akademischer Gesangverein, conductor of the Wiener Singakademie, and director of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein. From 1902 he also held a teaching position at the Konservatorium der Stadt Wien, where Clemens Krauss was among his pupils.
Alongside his compositional and educational work, Heuberger maintained an active career as a music critic. He contributed to the Neues Wiener Tagblatt beginning in 1881 and to the Allgemeine Zeitung in Munich from 1889. From 1896 until 1901 he wrote for the Neue Freie Presse, succeeding Eduard Hanslick in that role. He also served as editor of the Musikbuch aus Österreich between 1904 and 1906.
Heuberger composed across multiple genres, producing operas, operettas, ballets, choral works, and songs. His operas include Abenteuer einer Neujahrsnacht (1886), Manuel Venegas (1889, later revised as Mirjam, oder Das Maifest in 1894), and Barfüssele (1905). His operetta output spans Der Opernball (1898), Ihre Excellenz (1899, later revised as Eine entzückende Frau), Der Sechsuhrzug (1900), Das Baby (1902), Der Fürst von Düsterstein (1909), and Don Quixote (1910). His ballet compositions include Die Lautenschlägerin (1896) and Struwwelpeter (1897). Of this body of work, Der Opernball remains his most enduring piece, and it is the source material underlying his Broadway credit.
