About
Richard Carlyle (March 20, 1914 – November 15, 2009) was a Canadian-American actor who worked across stage, film, and television over the course of a career spanning several decades. He was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, and pursued formal training at the Sherwood Dramatic Art School and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Carlyle's stage career began with the company at the Barter Theatre and in stock productions in Springfield, Illinois. He went on to appear on Broadway between 1949 and 1954, with credits including Mrs. Gibbons' Boys, Out West of Eighth, Mr. Barry's Etchings, and Fragile Fox. He also maintained a long association with Theatre West in Los Angeles.
On television, Carlyle co-starred in "The Long Walk," an episode of Cameo Theatre that aired on May 30, 1950. The following year he took on the lead role of Jack Casey in the CBS television adaptation of Casey, Crime Photographer. From the 1950s onward he appeared as a character actor across numerous television series, including a role as Lieutenant Carl Jaeger in "The Squire of Gothos," a 1967 episode of the original Star Trek series.
His film work included the role of Rezin Bowie in The Iron Mistress (1952) and Commander Don Adams in Torpedo Run (1959), an Oscar-nominated war drama starring Glenn Ford.
Carlyle died in Los Angeles on November 15, 2009, at the age of 95.
