About
Richard Carlyle was a Canadian-American actor who worked in theatre, film, and television. Born on March 20, 1914, in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, he pursued formal training at the Sherwood Dramatic Art School and the Art Institute of Chicago before embarking on a professional career.
Carlyle's stage work began with the troupe at the Barter Theatre and in stock theatre productions in Springfield, Illinois. His Broadway career spanned from 1912 to 1925 and included appearances in Dawn, Seventh Heaven, A Holy Terror, Torches, and Alibi Bill.
On television, Carlyle co-starred in "The Long Walk," an episode of Cameo Theatre that aired on May 30, 1950. The following year he took on the lead role of Jack Casey in the CBS television adaptation of Casey, Crime Photographer. From the 1950s onward he appeared as a character actor across numerous television series, and he maintained a long association with Theatre West in Los Angeles.
His film work included the role of Rezin Bowie in The Iron Mistress in 1952 and Commander Don Adams in Torpedo Run in 1959, an Oscar-nominated war drama starring Glenn Ford. He also appeared in the original Star Trek series, playing Lieutenant Carl Jaeger in the episode "The Squire of Gothos" in 1967.
Carlyle died in Los Angeles on November 15, 2009, at the age of 95.
