About

Rex O'Malley (1901–1976) was a British stage and screen actor born in London, England, whose mother was an Irish seamstress. His career spanned Broadway, film, and television, with his Broadway appearances extending from 1927 to 1963.

O'Malley made his Broadway debut in 1927 in The Marquise, playing Miquel, and followed that the next year with a role as Geoffrey Trent in The Bachelor Father. He continued building his stage presence through the early 1930s, appearing as Sempronius in George Bernard Shaw's The Apple Cart in 1930 and as Eric Bailey in Lost Sheep that same year. In 1934 he took on two productions, playing James Salston in No More Ladies and Pablo in Revenge with Music. He returned to Broadway in 1936 as Dr. Robert Levy-de Coudray in Matrimony Pfd., and in 1939 he appeared in The Man Who Came to Dinner in the role of Beverly Carlton.

His later Broadway work included a range of productions across different genres. He played Epikhodov, Semen Panteleevich, a clerk, in The Cherry Orchard in 1944, and in 1946 appeared in both Lute Song as the steward Youen-Kong and in Lady Windermere's Fan as Mr. Cecil Graham. His subsequent Broadway credits included Charley's Aunt, The Naked Genius, The Lady of the Camellias, and The Sleeping Prince.

On screen, O'Malley is perhaps most recognized for two supporting film roles: Gaston in Camille (1936), the MGM production starring Greta Garbo, and a role in Midnight (1939), which featured Claudette Colbert and Don Ameche. His other film appearances included Somebody's Darling (1925), Zaza (1939), and The Thief (1952).
