About

Rex Garner (1921 – 17 May 2015) was a British actor and director born in Wolverhampton, England. He died at the age of 94 and was survived by seven children — Nicholas, Lindsey, Christopher, Geraldine Raper (née Garner), Sally Garner-Gibbons, Kerry, and Kim — as well as his ex-wife, Tammy Garner.

Garner's early television work included a recurring role as Vic Steele in the British series Shadow Squad, which he held from 1957 to 1959. He also co-starred in the British television production My Wife and I.

In 1968, Garner traveled to South Africa to join the Academy Theatre, eventually settling there permanently in 1974. Five years later he began a two-decade association with producer Pieter Toerien, working as both an actor and director until 1999. In 1981 he directed Tommie Meyer's film Birds of Paradise. His South African stage work earned him recognition at the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards, where he was named best actor in 1983 for his portrayal of Father Tim in Mass Appeal.

Garner's Broadway career included an appearance in 1970 in Not Now, Darling. Following his years in South Africa, he returned to the United Kingdom in the early 2000s.
