About

Reuben Greene is an American actor born on November 24, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, whose career spanned theater, film, and television. He is most closely associated with the role of Bernard in Mart Crowley's landmark play The Boys in the Band, a part he originated on stage and reprised in the 1970 film adaptation.

Greene's theatrical work formed the foundation of his professional life. His Broadway credits include an appearance in Pantagleize in 1967, and he continued to pursue stage work throughout his career alongside occasional appearances in commercials. His portrayal of Bernard in The Boys in the Band stands as his most prominent contribution to American theater, a role that carried over into the film version and brought him wider recognition.

Outside of the stage, Greene accumulated a modest but notable screen résumé. He played Dr. James Hudson on the CBS daytime soap opera Where the Heart Is in 1969, and appeared in a supporting capacity as Franklyn in director Elaine May's 1976 film Mikey and Nicky.

In a 1996 interview covered by the New York Daily News, Greene was reported to be living in Queens, New York. His last known public interview took place around 2000 with the Windy City Times, during which he addressed his personal life in relation to his work on The Boys in the Band, stating that he is not gay. By 2010, filmmaker Crayton Robey, whose documentary Making the Boys about the production of The Boys in the Band screened at the Tribeca Film Festival that year, noted in an interview with The Washington Blade that Greene's whereabouts had become unknown.
