About
Reed Diamond is an American actor born on July 20, 1967, in Brooklyn, New York. The son of Allison, an astrologer, and Bob Diamond, a director whose credits include The Joe Franklin Show, Diamond grew up in Manhattan and attended the Trinity School. He pursued higher education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for two years before transferring to the Juilliard School, where he trained in the Drama Division as a member of Group 20 from 1987 to 1991.
Diamond's stage work brought him to Broadway in 1991, when he appeared in The Homecoming. His early screen credits included guest appearances on Law & Order and Class of '96, along with film roles in Memphis Belle (1990), Clear and Present Danger (1994), and Her Hidden Truth (1995).
His television profile rose significantly in 1995 when he joined Homicide: Life on the Street, playing Detective Mike Kellerman as a series regular through Seasons 4 to 6. The character was written out at the close of Season 6, though Diamond returned for a two-episode arc in Season 7 and again for the 2000 feature-length television movie that concluded the series. He subsequently appeared in the pilot of The Shield in 2002 as Detective Terry Crowley, a role designed to surprise audiences when the character was killed at the end of the first episode, despite Diamond having been featured prominently in the show's promotional materials.
Film work during the 2000s included S.W.A.T. (2003), directed by his Homicide colleague Clark Johnson, Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Good Night, and Good Luck (2005). On television, he portrayed Inspector Jack Vasser in the NBC series Journeyman, which ran in fall 2007 before being cancelled in December of that year. He also took on recurring roles in Judging Amy as Stuart Collins and in Dollhouse as Lawrence Dominic, and guest-starred on programs including The West Wing, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Stargate SG-1, Medium, Numb3rs, Without a Trace, The Mentalist, and 24, in which he later played Jason Pillar in Season 8.
In the 2010s, Diamond appeared in Moneyball (2011), the TNT series Franklin & Bash, and the WGN series Underground, where he played plantation owner Tom Macon in the first season. He portrayed senior HYDRA agent Daniel Whitehall, also known as Werner Reinhardt, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. He also held a recurring role across the first two seasons of Designated Survivor as John Foerstel, Director of the FBI.
Diamond was married to Fredrika Kesten from 1995 to 1997. Since 2004, he has been married to actress Marnie McPhail, and the couple has a daughter.
