About

Rebekah Earle Cauble (May 8, 1901 – November 23, 1963) was an American stage actress who performed on Broadway between 1917 and 1925. She was also known professionally as Rhea Cauble and later in life as Rebekah Halee.

Cauble was born in Greenville, South Carolina, to Charles L. Cauble, a railroad engineer, and Felicia Folger Cauble. Her father died in 1905 as the result of an accidental train derailment. Following his death, the family relocated first to Atlanta and subsequently to New York. Cauble pursued her education at Salem College, a Moravian women's school located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her older sister Miriam was also active in the theatre, performing under the stage name Muriel Folger, derived from their mother's maiden name.

Before establishing herself in New York, Cauble traveled to Cincinnati to build her stage experience with a stock company. During her time there, she participated in a fundraiser for the Cincinnati Zoological Gardens in which she, as a teenager, was displayed in a cage billed as an "American Chicken." The event was reported as both unique and successful.

Her Broadway career encompassed five productions across nearly a decade. She appeared in the revue Doing Our Bit and the musical My Lady's Glove, both in 1917, followed by the musical Sinbad in 1918. She subsequently appeared in the musical Tangerine, which ran from 1921 to 1922, and the musical Oh! Oh! Nurse, which ran from 1925 to 1926. Beyond Broadway, her stage work included roles in Jim Jam Jems in 1921 and Little Jessie James in 1924. Later in her career she also worked in radio and television.

In her personal life, Cauble was engaged in the early 1920s to artist Alonzo C. Webb, a childhood friend. She married twice. Her first husband was David Clarkson Faulkner, with whom she had one son. Her second husband was Royal Walter Halee, a musician, composer, and singer; together they had two children, one of whom was Roy D. Halee, a Grammy-winning recording engineer. Royal Walter Halee died in 1960. Cauble died on November 23, 1963, at the age of 62, at Long Beach Memorial Hospital.
